artist development

In 2025 we launched our Artist Development programme, aimed at emerging artists aged 18-25 from refugee backgrounds who want to take the next step in their creative journeys. We have run three intensive projects where solo and collaborative artists from a range of disciplines come together to produce new work and experiment alongside each other. These have included a project in collaboration with students from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama’s BA Drama, Applied Theatre and Education course, a creative residential in the countryside and an intensive phase of making new work.

Our role is to mentor, support and nurture these artists. We provide production and logistical support, direction, dramaturgy and design, and opportunities to come together to share ideas. We offer rehearsal space, 1:1 support and a small production budget to enable ideas to come to life. Our artists work towards public sharings of their work, whether at work-in-progress showcases produced by us, or at other events we support them to apply to.

Sometimes the artists we support just need encouragement and tools to kickstart their creative plans. Others want to develop an idea into a full scale production, which we have been excited to do with Bichu, by Abel Atsede.

We are currently working with artists exploring theatre, new writing, opera, rock music, clown, improvisation, cabaret and film.

We are always keen to meet emerging artists who want to join our Artist Development programme. If you are already developing your own creative ideas and are able to commit to developing a project independently then we’d love to hear from you. Please contact our Head of Community Engagement, Alice Rayman, on alice@phosphorostheatre.com.

Our next work-in-progress performance event is at 3.30pm and 7pm Sunday 9th November at Theatre Deli. You can book tickets here.
